What a piece of happiness looks like
by
the kinkaid journals
October 05, 2017
It was a quiet night.
The sky was partly cloudy, but the stars were shining through.
The Florida atmosphere kept us warm, while the cool breeze blew through the air (although the breeze kept the heat at bay).
We were laying on our backs in the sand listening to either Post Malone or some country song, while the ocean's waves crashed in the background.
That night, the three of us talked about anything and everything that came to our minds. Whether it was something about all of our long-distant relationships, school, missing home, or life here. It was talked about.
And that night is what a piece of happiness looks like.
We didn't have a care in the world.
We splashed around in the water.
We sang loud and obnoxiously to some Taylor Swift.
We laughed super annoyingly.
And yet, we didn't have a care in the world.
In that moment, we didn't care who heard us.
We didn't care who saw us.
We were living.
We were living, together.
We were living a night that was long overdue, that all three of us needed.
And it was what a piece of happiness looked like.
Staring up into the sky, laying in the sand with two of my new and closest friends, talking about whatever, singing to whoever, and just being ourselves.
The sky cleared up, allowing the starry sky to light up the beach.
The moon cast across the ocean's horizon, lighting up the waves.
And for a quick moment, amongst all of our demons, there was what looked like, a single piece of happiness.

one of the biggest controveries in the world: evolution versus creation. i recently had to write a persuasive/argumentative speech on a controversial topic and i chose something i was interested in. this. below you'll find the essay i wrote, i hope you enjoy it (-: (DISCLAIMER: these are my views and opinions. i'm not trying to change any views or anything like that. the following essay is wholly me.)
her father always told her she couldn’t run away from her problems. her mother told her to always run towards what she wanted.
but what if there wasn’t even a destination?
but what if there wasn’t even a destination?
my grandmother told me growing up, that each of us has the blood of a race horse or the veins of a flower.
we were going to either win the race or grow a garden.
we were going to either win the race or grow a garden.
she had the blood of the world and veins like the sky. she would spend her life running and she was okay with that.
it was her way of feeling the beat of her heart. hearing the blood pulse through her. nothing tied her down.
it was her way of feeling the beat of her heart. hearing the blood pulse through her. nothing tied her down.
the fire she burned, destroyed the ropes, setting her free. she wasn’t running away and wasn’t running to. she was running to live, to be free.
she was running to build the home that was inside of herself.
she was running to build the home that was inside of herself.

dear class of 2017,
it seems as if yesterday we were walking through those doors, getting lost in the hallways, trying to figure out who to sit with at lunch in that big cafeteria. but today, it’s march and we’re walking through those doors for one of the last times, we now know our way around the hallways, and we found who we will sit with at lunch whether it’s in that big cafeteria or our favorite teacher’s classroom.
in less than two months we’ll have our last day, in less than three months we’ll be walking across that stage getting our diploma, and in less than six months some of us will be moving into our college dorms, going into the military, or working. in less than six months, we all will be going our own way. as exciting as that is, it’s also scary.
for the last four years, we’ve been going to school together. for the last four years, we’ve been cheering on the same football team, listening to the same choir, studying for the same tests. for the last four years, we’ve walked the same halls. in less than six months, it’s all going to change.
while a lot of us say “i can’t wait to get out of here”, or “what’s the point of this school work”, even “college can’t come soon enough” over and over, the familiarity of where we are, is all we’ve known. this familiarity is going to be a thing of the past as we embark on our own journey. this familiarity is where we feel comfortable and safe.
i’m not saying we shouldn’t be excited, because we should be. we should celebrate the fact that we survived those four years that felt like would never end. we should love the fact that we’re seniors and we rule the school. we should be excited for our senior night, and our graduation parties, prom and the senior picnic. we should feel proud of all that we’ve accomplished from getting into national honor society to getting accepted into our dream schools.
i’m saying we should take these last few months and embrace them as hard as we should. we should thank those teachers we love and have helped us get through this. we should look to our coaches and remember we wouldn’t be standing on that field if it wasn’t for them. we should hug our friends more because they were there for us when no one else was. we should spend as much time as we can with our families since some of us will be leaving them.
they’re right when they say time flies, because yesterday i swear i was walking through those doors, getting lost in the hallways, and was trying to figure out who i was going to sit with at lunch.
so, let’s make these last few months a time to remember. a time we can look back on and smile. a time we won’t regret, a time we will take with us as we go our own ways.
love,
a fellow senior

when you're feeling lost or abandoned or invisible

tonight, i'm going to start off with this:
maybe because i'm going off to college in a few months and people are learning how to live without me. maybe they're pouring their interest into something else to make it less hard for when i do leave.
or maybe it's because i've been wanting to get out, get away from this place and now that i have that opportunity people are deciding to leave me alone. or they don't realize underneath all of my excitement, i'm scared.
don't get me wrong, i'm so excited to be starting my life at college and be away from this seemingly small, suffocating town. but it means leaving behind everything i've ever known. all the people i know. driving away from all the familiar roads, and seeing those usual faces everyday.
back to the point, tonight i broke. the feeling was overwhelming and i couldn't ball it up anymore, i couldn't shove it down my throat, to my heart anymore. the tears were unstoppable. i didn't know what else to do.
i reached for my journal to write, but found my grandfather's bible. i thought why not. flipping through the pages, not sure what i was looking for, i stumbled upon psalms 107:4-14.
and it helped.
my bible verse translation skills aren't that good, but i managed to get what i was searching for out of this verse.
previously mentioned, i was feeling lost and forgotten, and invisible. but the words "they wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way//he brought them out of the darkness" made me feel not so lost, not so abandoned, and that someone could see me.
as i sit here typing this, i'm feeling better. as i sit here typing this, the realization that i can get myself through this, floods over me. and as i sit here typing this, i know i'm not alone.
i'm not alone. you're not alone. and we're not alone.
just remember that.

now, why? the past couple of days, maybe weeks, i've been feeling lost. i've been feeling forgotten and invisible. but why? honestly, i'm not exactly sure.4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
maybe because i'm going off to college in a few months and people are learning how to live without me. maybe they're pouring their interest into something else to make it less hard for when i do leave.

stuck in the in between
growing up in her small town
always craving something bigger,
she knew it wasn't her place
but the city,
the city intrigued her
how awake everyone was
and how you were completely anonymous
but somehow your existence still mattered
even if it turned her on, or awakened her
it wasn't enough
nowhere felt right, nothing felt like home, nothing felt like it was her place or where she was meant to be
my mother told me that everyone has a purpose in their life
some were to become like everyone else, to slow down
but her purpose was different --
hers was to run, to live, to be free
that's the only way she was truly uncaged
growing up in her small town
always craving something bigger
she knew it wasn't her place
and even when the city awoke something inside of her
she knew she didn't really belong anywhere
no town
no city
no man
no world
could keep her locked in
she was meant to run
to be free
she was meant to be her own home
and that was what made her,
her
who she was

i am no angel
i write with only the feathers that have fallen
i am no angel
i don't fly the same way as you
i am no angel
my savior isn't the same as yours
I am no angel
my desires are sinful. they're different, darker
i am no angel. I am filled with the lust of human
my mind is clouded with what you can only imagine
i wasn't born this way. my surroundings have changed me
i was an angel
time has differed parts of me.
i am a fallen angel picked apart by those who now hold my feathers
i am an angel
not the type that has her wings, or grants protection to those who need it
i am the angel that has fallen
and is now struggling to get back on her feet
and learn how to fly again
against everyone’s will

The cold, chilling New York City air hit me as soon as I stepped out from my hotel into the night. It was April, but felt like February. As I walked down the sidewalk in the direction of Times Square, the smell of pretzels overcame my nose, the bright, colorful lights were blinding, and the sound of thousands of conversations going on, mixed with cabs honking was almost deafening. Even at night the city was wide awake, and I loved it.
The tall, glamorous Empire State building came into view as I walked away from Times Square. The building was lit with a bright, white light which brightened the dark area that surrounded the “empire”. Walking into the building was magnificent, everything seemed to be gold-plated and extremely fancy. Although the ride up into the building was small, hot, and cramped, the elevator was gold and fancy. Stepping out from the elevator into the 90th floor lobby, a woman directed us to the balcony in order to look out over the city. The city air wasn't as cold when I stepped out but I got chills. I don't know if I got chills from the cold, or how beautiful the city was.
I pushed my way to the front fence, getting shoved by other people. The camera lights flashing and parents yelling for their kids was overwhelming but I soon drifted into my thoughts, forgetting my surroundings. From ninety stories up, looking over New York City was an amazing experience. From up here, watching thousands of people living there lives was beautiful. Think about it, everyone down there so different and unique, dealing with their own issues and falling in love, or going home to make dinner. There are so many people in the world who have their own lives, their own stories.
Looking down there, everyone and everything seemed so important, but from up here everyone and everything seemed so small.and even though we all have our own lives, our own stories, I had the realization that nothing trivial really mattered and looking over this gigantic, beautiful city gave me satisfaction that in the bigger picture, my problems now won't bother me.
My mom tapping me on the shoulder knocked me out of my thoughts, and although it was freezing I felt warm, and content. the elevator wasn't so crowded and the streets weren't bothering me. As I walked back to my hotel, the colorful lights soothed me and the thousands of conversations didn't affect me.
merriam-webster's dictionary describes happiness as this:
so today, on international day of happiness, think about what makes you happy and why. if you're not, ask yourself why, what can you do to become happy.
just remember; true happiness comes from within, because at the end of the day, it's just you and you.
happy international day of happiness (-:

1) obsolete : good fortune : prosperity
all happiness bechance to thee — William Shakespeare
2) a : a state of well-being and contentment : joy
b : a pleasurable or satisfying experience I wish you every happiness in life.
I had the happiness of seeing you — W. S. Gilbert
3) felicity, aptness
a striking happiness of expression
but, in all honesty, how can happiness, something everyone strives for their entire life, the thing that makes the world go round, be put into three words? it can't. why? because happiness for me, is different from what happiness is to you.
today on the international day of happiness, think about what truly makes you happy. i know i did.
the last few years i've been drowning, and struggling to come up for air. and it was like no one could hear my screams for help. i hated school, i lost a lot of close friends, my family went through hell, and sadly through all of that, i lost myself. i the person i was. i lost the person i wanted to be.
i hated my life, and i was depressed.
and then one day it was like i could breath again. i didn't hate school, i felt like i was actually learning. i found people who really cared about me and wasn't just "vacationing" in my life. my family started to come together. and i learned about me. i'm still learning about. i'm figuring out who i'm not. and i'm figuring out how to live this life, the best i can, without going under.
i could never say i was happy. but literally a month ago, i said it:
i am happy.it was a big step for me by saying that. i was afraid i was going to jinx it. but i couldn't be afraid of that. i had to let myself be happy. i'm not naive to think that i won't ever be sad again, it's life. life happens. sadness comes and goes, but so does happiness. jean-yves luloup once said:
"sometimes we must undergo hardships, breakups, and narcissistic wounds, which shatter the flattering image that we had of ourselves, in order to discover two truths: that we are not who we thought we were; and that the loss of a cherished pleasure is not necessarily the loss of true happiness and well-being"i was asked if i would ever take back my experiences and i said no. why? because it's made me into the person i am. the experiences made me find the real me. it made me go through hell, to get to heaven.
so today, on international day of happiness, think about what makes you happy and why. if you're not, ask yourself why, what can you do to become happy.
just remember; true happiness comes from within, because at the end of the day, it's just you and you.

dear you,
“when you lose a
best friend, it’s worse than losing a lover because you’re losing more than a
heart, you’re losing a piece of yourself” ironically, i came across this quote a few days
after you and i “broke up”. subconsciously i think we both knew it was over, at
that point we were two different people leading two different lives. it’s been
two years since we’ve spoken to one another, but even now…
i remember when we first met—it was the first day of kindergarten and
you had just moved here. we became best friends almost instantly. years went by
full of hugs, playground games, birthday parties, smiles, sleepovers, and
laughs. it was a good time, but then you moved.
let me clarify it wasn’t the move that killed our friendship, i believe
it might’ve grew stronger when you came back. it was what happened to you when
you moved. when you came back you were broken. your mom took her anger out on
you and then you ended up taking your sadness out onto yourself.
most people think that emotions, or feelings, aren’t physical. but i
know you believe differently.
i was there for you.
i listened to you. i gave you my shoulder to cry
on.
my grandparents always used to tell me that people, or friends, will
end up taking different paths, turning away, and that’s exactly what you did. i’m
not condoning what happened, but i honestly can’t blame you. you had a terrible
family life, you weren’t happy, and when you were alone there was nothing else
to turn too. this is where we fought a lot, fighting for our friendship,
fighting for ourselves, maybe fighting for our own path. I think maybe my
biggest problem was my best friend started to verge away. i didn’t want to lose
you.
i realized through this that i couldn’t stop you from destroying
yourself. And the thought of that sucked, but it stuck with me. you can’t stop
people from making those bad choices, going down the wrong path, or just destroying
themselves. you just had to be there for them when they fall.
i was there to catch you.
freshmen year was the
beginning of the end. september was great, she and i had classes together,
bonding more than usual but then you met him. like i said, you were already
starting to go down the wrong path but when you met him, you fully merged (in
my opinion). From my perspective, he completely and utterly used you. you
thought you could change him but he was tearing you apart.
through everything i was there for you, even when all if my
drama was because of you. i was your best friend when you weren’t mine.
sometimes after our fights you would come back and say you need me, i was your
best friend. but i wasn’t. i couldn’t force you to be my best friend.
you
couldn’t force someone to be in your life, even when you need them and they
need you.
this letter wasn’t meant to yell at you or blame everything
on you, because it wasn’t all your fault. when i lost myself, i needed myself, i stopped listening,
and i needed my own shoulder to cry on.
and i’m sorry.
maybe i wasn’t there to catch you when you fell.
and i’m sorry.
and maybe i was afraid of losing you because i didn’t know
myself without you, which was selfish. maybe we needed to lose each other so we
could find ourselves.
and i’m sorry.
you were my best
friend during the best and worst years of my life. your part of the reason why
i’m the person i am. you helped me forget, you helped me not feel so alone all
the time. we don’t
talk anymore, i think we both are figuring out life. we couldn’t be friends and
be who we are today, subconsciously i knew that, but even now i
still think about you, worry about you, wonder how you’re doing, and hope the
world is treating you right. why? because no matter what, you were a part of
me.
