have you ever visited your statehouse? have you ever sat in, while your state senate voted? have you ever seen or heard about the history behind your state's government? well i have.
so, since i'm in an ap government class, my teacher took us on a field trip to our state house, the maryland statehouse!!!
the experience was really amazing. i actually learned something about my state government. i even saw where george washington once stood when he was resigning.
we arrived in the morning and were shuffled into the general assembly room. we sat there learning what our day would entail. after that we got into our groups and tried to make our way to the main building.
there was actually a protest going on at the same time and we had to push through the crowd. it was wild. i had never seen a real protest in real life before, so it was different. i think it was against public schooling, and pro-private school.
once we pushed past the crowds, we stood on the big steps in front of the statehouse and got our picture taken with the president of the senate!
we then split up into smaller groups and made our way through the history of my state's government. first, we sat in on a senate voting session. our tour guide told us to watch how long it took for the senators to make their way into the room, and to count how many times the bell rang for them to get into there. it was actually really funny.
next we went to all the rooms, the ones open to the public lol, which included one of the first voting rooms. i learned all about maryland's government. in one of the rooms there was a huge gallery of all the past governors.
one of my favorite parts of the statehouse was the architecture. the ceilings were gorgeous and just the entire building.
it was a short trip, but it was fun and interesting.
xoxo,
l.k
